Checkin' in on this Sunday

Well, here it is, almost 11:30, I'm still half asleep...lol, and getting ready to pour my second cup of coffee. Let's hope that helps get the ole eyelids open.

Yesterday was a very full, but wonderful day, for the most part. My home church in Lebanon, the church I was raised in most of my life, celebrated their 70th anniversary yesterday with a wonderful service and get-together, yesterday, beginning at 2:00, and not ending till almost 10:00, last night. When Lee and I attended this church, several years ago, I was organist for the church, so when the celebration was planned, I was asked if I would play the organ, and participate in some of the activities. Naturally, and without hesitation, I accepted. It was such a great and fabulous afternoon, and evening, visiting with friends, some of who we had not seen in years...and I mean years, in some cases...10-15 yrs. or more. There was all sorts of singing, and special music, words of rememberance from many of the former pastors of the church...my dad being one of them. My Dad, not feeling very well, and not able to stand for long periods, asked my Mom to do the speaking to the congregation, reflecting on the 8 yrs. that my Dad had served as pastor to the Taylor Ave. Church of God, as it use to be called. In 1970, a new church was built, now Highland Park Church of God, and the congregation has continued to grow. There was much reflecting on the many memories that so many people had, and sharing all the good times that had been a part of our past. We were served a great dinner. There was also a movies shown, made up of all the old memories of the Taylor Ave. Church, and of course, pictures, that made some of us burst into laughter, at the sight of some of us in our "very" young youth! lol I think the one they showed of me....I was probably about 3! hahaha All in all, we had a fabulous day and evening, and enjoyed so much visiting with friends that we hadn't seen in so many years. Landon, Kenny, and Gabriel, went with us, and we finally arrived back at Landon's house, a little before 1:00. I would like to say it was the perfect ending to the perfect day, but.....

Landon and Amanda have to cats, that they have had for a little over 2 yrs.... Yoda, and Gimpy. They got them as kittens, and the cats have grown up together since they were just little. Starting about 5 days ago, they noticted Gimpy, not acting like he felt very well. They watched him closely, making sure he was eating, and still had his appitite, drinking, etc. We had no sooner dropped off Landon, and were headed home, that my cell rang, and Landon wanted to talk to Lee. Next thing I know, they're talking about something maybe biting him, and discussing other possibilites. After Lee hung up the phone, he told me that Landon had noticed that one of Gimpy's legs was horribly swollen. Lee had told Landon to look and see if he could find a place on his leg, to tell if possibly Gimpy had been bitten by something, that would cause his leg to swell the way it was. Less than 10 mins. later, my cell rang again, Landon, sobbing horribly, and almost unable to talk. He said that when he started to look at Gimpy's leg, he noticed a spot that look a little "wet", as though it might be infected. When he gently tried to part the hair on Gimpy's leg to look, he said that the meat/flesh, just feel off into his hands. The skin on his leg was literally rotting off. By this time, Landon said he could tell he was in pain, and hurting terribly. Landon was beside himself, not knowing what to do. They do not have the extra money for a vet, but from what he was telling us, we didn't think it would make much difference. Landon was horribly upset, saying that he didn't know if he had the heart to try and put Gimpy down by himself....especially with no means of doing so....shy of breaking his neck, or using a knife...and Landon does NOT have that in him. He is way too much like me....a very loving and sensative heart, especially, when it came to his kitties. We were almost home when Landon called us the second time, so we stopped at the house, dropped off Moriah, and headed back out to Landon's, as we had discussed with landon that the quickest, and least painful way for Gimpy to not suffer any longer, was for Lee to give him a shot of insulin. It was a gut wrenching site when we got to Landon's, and witnessed Amanda sitting in the yard sobbing horribly, and diggin a whole in the dirt with her fingers. I asked her then if Gimpy was already gone....she wasn't sure. When I got in the house, Landon was standing beside a box, crying like a little baby, and petting Gimpy, who was laying in the box, stuggeling even then, to catch his next breath of air. It wasn't but a few seconds later that Lee came in, and we told him that the end was near, and it wouldn't be long. Landon was so upset, and we knew that anything we could do to speed this along, could only be the best thing to do. Landon and both watched as Lee filled the syringe, and put it into Gimpy's hip, and then I took Landon's head, turned it away, and held him while he cried almost uncontrolably. By the time we turned back around, Gimpy had already taken his last breath. We don't know if the insulin worked that fast, or if he was just that close to being gone, since it was only a matter of a few seconds after Lee gave him the shot before he was gone. Naturally, there were many, many tears. We have no idea what happened, although, we now have an idea. We are thinking that possibly, Gimpy was bitten by a brown recluse spider. They are terribly poisonious, and when someone, or something is bitten by one of them, the poison begins to immediately kills the flesh, it begins to die, and rot away. We could smell the stinch of rotten meat, coming from Gimpy's leg.

So, what was a wonderful afternoon and evening, turned in to a very sad and depressing one, for all of us. Gimpy was such a beautiful, and sweet cat....I know they're going to miss him terribly. Poor Yoda...their other cat, we know will be totally lost, since he and Gimpy were raised together since they were kittens.

There's a chance for some thunderstorms today...remnants from Rita coming through, but right now, at Noon, the sun is shinning. I'm not sure what we're doing today. We were considering going to Fayette...the small town close to here, where we use to live, to see some friends, and have a look at the new motorcycle that he bought. But, that may not happen, especially if it rains. We are defiantely going to get together with Landon and Amanda later this afternoon, or this evening, and do spagetti for supper. We're just not sure what time.

I got some new pictures from Kirk and Tara-Lee...so naturally, I've included them.

I hope you all have a great day! Hope it is as pretty where you are as it is in central Missouri, right now. Let's hope that the weather stays this nice. I guess I'll take off, since Justin just called from Fayette, and it looks like we're headed that direction at some point in the next hour or so....who knows how fast we'll get around. We may give Landon a call and see if he wants to go with us....just a chance to get out of the house.

I'm sure I'll be around later this evening, and will probably check in with you all again.

Have a great day!

Much love,
Lev
